Change the design of your live site

Ask the design agent for a new layout, section type, header, footer or style, review a preview, then publish the change or discard it.

The editor and the content agent change what your pages say. To change how they look, use a design change: layouts, new kinds of sections, the header or footer, page templates and styles. The design agent works on a copy of your site, and you review a preview before anything goes live.

Ask for a change

Open the site's Design page. Under Request a design change:

  • What should change? Describe it in your own words, for example "Add a gallery of student artwork to the about page, three across on desktop."
  • Page (optional): name one page, such as /about/. Leave it empty for a change across the whole site.

Choose Request the change. Owners and developers can request design changes.

What the design agent does

It changes your site's design and code as the request needs, and keeps every fact and all the content you wrote. It only changes wording where the design needs it. It follows your site's design brief, so the change fits the rest of the site. It then builds the site, checks the pages it changed on desktop and on a phone, and writes you a short note on what it did.

This usually takes 5 to 15 minutes. You can close the page: we'll email you when it's ready to review.

Review the preview

The Design page shows Preview with the design change, and the designer's note under From the designer. Switch between Desktop and Mobile, or choose Open in a new tab to click through the whole site. Your live site stays as it is until you publish.

If something should change, write it under Feedback, optionally naming a page, and choose Send feedback. Each round takes a few minutes, and you can send as many as you need.

Publish or discard

  • Publish the change puts it live straight away.
  • Discard the change drops it. Choose it again to confirm, and the live site stays exactly as it was.

If a change stops before it finishes, the Design page says so and you get an email. Choose Try again to carry on from where it stopped, or discard it.

What it costs

A design change uses 10 actions when it starts, and each feedback round on it uses 10 more. The Design page shows the cost and how many actions you have left before you send anything. If a round ends without changing anything on your site, for example because you asked for a whole redesign, its actions are given back and the designer's note says so.

One change at a time

  • A design change starts from your live site, so the site must be published, the editor must have no unpublished changes, and the content agent must not be working on the site. If something is in the way, the Design page tells you what.
  • While a change is open, editing pauses: the editor shows a notice and the content agent waits. Both carry on once the change is published or discarded.
  • A design change is for a change, not a whole new site. If you ask for a complete redesign, the agent says so in a sentence instead of starting. Ask for specific changes instead, one at a time.

Good to know

  • History on the Design page lists your site's first build and every design change, with what was asked and whether it was published or discarded.
  • Design brief shows what the design agent works from: your business, your visitors and the look. Choose Read the brief to see all of it.
  • A design change can also add a language to your site. See More than one language.
