Wix alternatives: 7 options and who each suits
Wix alternatives compared by need: a store, design control, a cheap simple site, full ownership or a site kept current for you. Prices as of November 2026.
Updated November 1, 2026The best Wix alternative depends on why you're leaving. If renewals keep rising, Hostinger Website Builder or a self-hosted WordPress site cost less. If you sell products, Shopify. If you want a better-looking site without learning a design tool, Squarespace. If you want to own your site's files, WordPress or Firetend. And if Wix's scheduling, store and app market are what you actually use, staying may be the right call. Below: what people complain about, seven alternatives grouped by need, and what each does better and worse than Wix.
Why people leave Wix
Three complaints come up again and again.
Renewal prices. A small-site owner on the BleepingComputer forums wrote in January 2026 that their price goes up every year, that Wix's explanation was new features they don't use, and that three basic sites had become a "money trap". On ProductReview.com.au, where Wix is rated 1.3 out of 5 from 182 reviews, a reviewer describes a May 2026 renewal charged 19 days early, with what they called an unannounced 27% increase. Review sites attract unhappy customers, so read that as a pattern of complaints, not a measure of every account. The pattern is consistent, though: billing and renewals, more than the editor.
You can't take the site with you. Wix's own help centre says a Wix site "needs to be hosted and operated on Wix's servers" and that its architecture "does not support external hosting" (Wix Help Center). You can transfer your domain, but leaving means rebuilding the pages somewhere else. That is also why people put off leaving: the cost of moving grows with every page you add.
Outgrowing it. In a long-running thread on Wix's own forum, a shop owner listed missing store features, slow pages and feature requests that sat on vote pages for months, and moved towards Shopify. A Wix representative replied that load times and store features had improved, and that thread is from 2020, so treat the specifics as dated. The broader point still holds for growing shops: a general builder with a store bolted on is not the same as a store platform. Tooltester's review adds two smaller ones: you can't switch templates after publishing without losing content, and Wix's design freedom makes it easy to overdesign (Tooltester).
The short list
| Alternative | Best for | From (as of November 2026) | Better than Wix | Worse than Wix |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shopify | An online store | $29/mo billed yearly | Store tools, apps, checkout | Not built for content-led sites |
| Squarespace | A good-looking site with little effort | $19/mo billed yearly | Templates, consistent design | Fewer apps, less layout freedom |
| Webflow | Designers who want full control | $15/mo billed yearly | Clean code, real CMS | Learning curve, also hosted-only |
| Framer | Fast portfolio or landing sites | $10/mo billed yearly | Speed of building, modern design | Small CMS on cheaper plans |
| Hostinger Website Builder | The cheapest simple site | $2.49/mo on a 48-month term | Price | Renewal price is much higher |
| WordPress (self-hosted) | Full control and ownership | Free software, plus hosting | You own everything, any host | You maintain it |
| Firetend (our product) | A service business that wants the site kept current | $39/mo ($32 billed yearly) | Owns files, AI keeps content current | No store, no own booking system, no drag-and-drop |

If you sell products: Shopify
Who it suits: anyone whose site is mainly a shop, or a shop that has outgrown Wix's store.
Shopify's Basic plan is $29 a month paid yearly, with Grow at $79 and Advanced at $299 (as of November 2026; the pricing page shows prices in your local currency). If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Basic adds a 2% transaction fee.
Better than Wix: a store platform first, with an app store and themes built around selling, and the checkout most shoppers already know. Worse than Wix: a content or service site with no products gets little from it, and the costs add up with paid apps. Wix also includes scheduling on its Core plan; Shopify needs an app for that.
If you want it to look better with less effort: Squarespace
Who it suits: small businesses, creatives and personal brands who want a polished site without designing one.
Squarespace's Basic plan is $19 a month and Core $29 a month on annual billing, after a price rise in July 2026 that PetaPixel reported took Core from $23 (as of November 2026; Squarespace pricing). Basic charges a 2% fee on store sales; Core and above don't (Squarespace Help).
Better than Wix: templates are more consistent, so it's harder to end up with a messy site. Worse than Wix: fewer apps and less freedom over layout, and it is also a closed platform, so the same "you'll rebuild to leave" rule applies. Squarespace raised prices this year too, so if renewals are your reason for leaving, read our Squarespace alternatives first. For a straight comparison of the two, see Wix vs Squarespace.
If you're a designer: Webflow or Framer
Webflow suits designers and marketing teams who want control over every element and a proper content system. The Basic site plan is $15 a month billed yearly, and Premium, which includes the CMS, is $25 (as of November 2026).
Better than Wix: precise layouts, clean code and a CMS built for structured content. Worse than Wix: a steep learning curve, and Webflow is also hosted-only for CMS sites: exported code leaves out CMS content. Webflow changed its pricing in 2026 too; see Webflow alternatives.
Framer suits portfolios, landing pages and small marketing sites. Basic is $10 a month and Pro $30 a month on yearly billing (as of November 2026), with extra editors charged per seat.
Better than Wix: fast to build in, modern-looking by default. Worse than Wix: Basic has 30 pages and 2 CMS collections, and there's no built-in store or booking.
If you want the cheapest simple site: Hostinger Website Builder
Who it suits: a few-page site where price matters most.
Hostinger's builder starts at $2.49 a month, but only on a 48-month term paid upfront ($119.52), renewing at $10.99 a month (as of November 2026).
Better than Wix: much cheaper in the first term. Worse than Wix: the low price depends on a four-year commitment and renews at several times the starting rate, so it moves the renewal problem rather than solving it. Fewer business features and apps.
If you want to own everything: WordPress
Who it suits: people who want to choose their host, own every file, and are willing to look after the site (or pay someone to).
WordPress itself is free; you pay for hosting, a theme and any premium plugins. If you'd rather not run hosting, WordPress.com's plans start at $4 a month billed yearly (as of November 2026), and plugins need the Personal plan or above.
Better than Wix: you can move host at any time, and there's a plugin for almost everything. Worse than Wix: updates, backups and security are your job. In 2025, 91% of new WordPress vulnerabilities were in plugins, according to Patchstack. See WordPress alternatives for why some people go the other way.
If you run a service business and want the site kept current: Firetend (our product)
Who it suits: clinics, schools, studios and firms whose Wix site was built once and hasn't been touched since, and who would rather approve changes than make them.
Firetend reads your current Wix site for your services, locations, team and wording, and the design agent rebuilds it. Choose Keep my look, make it much better to keep your colours and logo. You get a design brief and a first look in about five minutes, and the full site in 15 to 40 minutes after you approve. After launch, a content agent writes articles, refreshes pages and adds service or location pages; for bigger work it first proposes the search phrase, how many people search for it, the title and outline, and waits for your "go". Plans start at $39 a month, or $32 billed yearly, for one site (pricing). The research, brief and first look are free.
Better than Wix: the site is kept current for you, and you can download the whole project (Astro and Markdown files) at any time and host it elsewhere. Every site has structured data, a sitemap and fast static pages built in, not as add-ons. Worse than Wix: no store or checkout, no booking system of its own (it embeds Calendly, Acuity, SimplyBook and the like), no member logins, no app market, and no drag-and-drop canvas: you edit by clicking text, using forms or asking the agents. We're a new, small company. Firetend also doesn't set up redirects from your old Wix URLs automatically.
Firetend is the wrong choice if you sell products online, take bookings through Wix Bookings and want that inside your site, or enjoy designing pages yourself. Shopify, staying on Wix, or Webflow fit those better. See how the rebuild works on AI website redesign.
When staying on Wix is the right call
Wix still does a lot in one place: a store, scheduling and services on Core, and a large app market. If you use those, your renewal is the price of not stitching four tools together. Before you move, list what you actually use. If it's five pages and a contact form, almost any alternative here will cost less. If it's bookings, a store, member areas and a blog, the honest comparison is Wix against two or three tools combined.
Planning the move
- Expect a rebuild. Wix can't export your site, so every alternative means rebuilding the pages. Tools that read your existing site (Firetend does) or migration services save the retyping, but not the checking.
- Keep your URLs or redirect them. Make a list of your Wix page addresses before you leave, and set up 301 redirects on the new site for any that change. Our website redesign SEO guide covers this.
- Move the domain last. Point it at the new site only when that site is ready. Your domain isn't tied to the site: Wix says you can manage it with another provider and point it wherever you like.
- Check renewal dates. Several complaints above are about renewals charged before people expected. Note yours.
FAQ
What is the best alternative to Wix?
There isn't one for everyone. For a store, Shopify. For a polished site with little effort, Squarespace. For design control, Webflow. For the lowest price, Hostinger, if a four-year term suits you. For full ownership, WordPress. For a service business that wants its site maintained, Firetend.
Can I move my Wix site to another platform?
Not directly. Wix says its sites must run on Wix's servers, so you rebuild the site on the new platform and move the domain. Blog posts, text and images can be copied over; the design can't be exported.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Wix?
Yes. Hostinger Website Builder and WordPress.com both start well below Wix's $17 a month Light plan (as of November 2026, Wix plans). Compare the renewal price, not just the first-term price.
Which Wix alternative is best for SEO?
All of these can rank. What matters more is fast pages, clear titles and descriptions, structured data and regular, useful content. See our comparison of the best website builders for SEO.
Does Firetend have a drag-and-drop editor like Wix?
No. You edit by clicking text on the page, moving sections, using forms, or asking the agents. If dragging elements around is how you like to work, Wix, Squarespace or Webflow will suit you better.
