Website redesign cost: prices and timelines

What a website redesign costs with a builder, freelancer, agency or AI tool, how long each takes, what drives the price and what you keep paying after launch.

Updated November 1, 2026

A website redesign costs anything from a few hundred dollars a year to well over $40,000, depending on who does the work. WebFX, a US agency, puts typical redesigns at $3,000 to $10,000 with a freelancer and $5,000 to $75,000 with an agency, and $800 to $5,000 done in-house or yourself (WebFX). AI tools now sit below all of these, at a monthly subscription. Below are the ranges by option, with sources, what pushes a price up, how long each takes and what you keep paying afterwards.

These figures come from businesses that sell redesigns, so treat them as published price lists, not neutral surveys. They still agree on the shape: freelancers in the low thousands, agencies from five figures, and the spread driven by size and features.

Doing it yourself

Builder subscriptions are the cheapest part. Wix lists plans from $17.77 to $159.77 a month billed yearly, as of November 2026, and notes that prices vary by location (Wix). The real cost is your time: choosing a template, rewriting every page, moving images, fixing the mobile layout and redoing what the old site already had, such as contact forms and page titles. WebFX's $800 to $5,000 range for in-house or DIY work reflects that the plan is cheap but the hours are not.

Freelancer

A freelancer typically costs $3,000 to $10,000 for a redesign, according to WebFX. Rates depend heavily on where the freelancer lives and how experienced they are. You get one person's skills: a good designer may not write your copy or handle the move of your search rankings, so ask what's included.

Agency

Agencies cost the most and do the most: discovery workshops, a sitemap, wireframes, custom design, development, testing and launch support. Clique Studios publishes its ranges: $15,000 to $40,000 for a small business site of 10-20 pages, $40,000 to $100,000 for 30-75 pages, and $100,000 to $250,000 or more for 100+ pages with complex integrations (Clique Studios). It lists agency hourly rates from $100-$150 at small studios to $225-$350 or more at large agencies.

AI redesign tools

AI tools read your current site and generate a new design. They differ in what you get at the end:

  • Shuffle generates redesigns from several AI models side by side and exports the code. As of November 2026: a $10 seven-day pass, $24 a month, $99 a year or $249 for lifetime access (Shuffle). You host and maintain the exported code.
  • Macaly rebuilds your site from its address and hosts it. As of November 2026, plans run from free to $350 a month for its Agency plan, with a $10 Starter plan for one site on a custom domain (Macaly).
  • Firetend (our product) reads your site, keeps your look if you ask it to, builds every page with your content moved over, then hosts and maintains it. Plans are below.

What drives the cost

The same factors come up in every price list. WebFX names size, design style, functionality, integrations, content and copywriting, responsive design and marketing. Clique adds the number of unique page templates, content migration volume, accessibility, SEO migration planning and the number of stakeholders and revision rounds (Clique Studios).

In practice:

  • Number of page types, not just pages. Twenty service pages built on one layout cost less than twenty pages that each look different.
  • Features. An online shop, booking, member logins or a calculator each add real work. Clique lists e-commerce redesigns from $40,000.
  • Content. Moving and rewriting copy is often the slowest part. Clique quotes copywriting at $100 to $300 a page.
  • Photography and video. Clique quotes $3,000 to $15,000 for custom photography and $5,000 to $25,000 per video.
  • People. More decision-makers means more revision rounds.

How long does a website redesign take?

Clique Studios gives 8 to 12 weeks for a small business site of 10-20 pages, 12 to 16 weeks for 30-75 pages, and 16 to 24 weeks for 100+ pages, and says projects can run 30-50% over when feedback or content is late (Clique Studios timeline). Webstacks says most full B2B redesigns take three to four months, and a focused redesign of priority pages about 6 to 8 weeks (Webstacks).

A typical agency timeline for a mid-sized site, from Clique:

PhaseTime
Discovery and strategy2-3 weeks
Information architecture and sitemap1-2 weeks
Wireframes and UX2-3 weeks
Visual design3-4 weeks
Development6-8 weeks
Content migration1-2 weeks (overlaps development)
Testing2 weeks
Launch and support1-2 weeks

Both sources name the same causes of delay: slow approvals, content that isn't ready, and requirements that change mid-project.

With Firetend, the machine time is short: a design brief and first look in about five minutes, the full build in 15 to 40 minutes, and each feedback round a few minutes. The rest is your time: reading the brief, answering its facts to confirm, checking each page and connecting your domain. How long that takes is up to you.

Ongoing costs after the redesign

The launch price isn't the whole bill. Clique puts ongoing maintenance at 15-20% of the build cost a year, and small business hosting and maintenance at $1,500 to $3,000 a year (Clique Studios). On top of that:

  • Hosting and domain. Builders include hosting in the plan; freelancer and agency sites often need it separately.
  • Updates and fixes. Plugin updates, broken forms, security patches.
  • Content. New service pages, articles and refreshed pages, each one written by someone.
  • The next redesign. A site nobody updates drifts out of date, and the cycle starts again.

See website maintenance cost for these in detail.

Where Firetend fits

Firetend's plans include hosting, publishing, the site's first AI build with a few feedback rounds, and a content agent that keeps the site current afterwards:

PlanPriceSitesAI actions a month
Free$010
Starter$39/mo ($32/mo yearly)1150
Growth$99/mo ($82/mo yearly)3500
Agency$249/mo ($207/mo yearly)101,200

The free plan covers the research, the design brief and the first look, so you see the redesign before paying. An article or a refreshed page uses 10 actions, so a Starter site can get roughly 15 a month. A year of Starter billed yearly is $384, hosting and ongoing content included. There's no free trial, but every plan has a 14-day money-back guarantee. Details on pricing.

It's not the right fit for everyone. Firetend has no online shop, no booking system of its own (it embeds calendars such as Calendly and Acuity), no member logins and no drag-and-drop editor. If you need those, a builder or an agency is the better spend. For service businesses such as clinics, schools, studios and firms, see AI website redesign and the website redesign checklist.

FAQ

How much does it cost to redesign a website?

Published price lists put a freelancer at $3,000 to $10,000 and an agency at $5,000 to $75,000, with in-house or DIY work at $800 to $5,000 (WebFX). AI tools cost a monthly subscription; Firetend starts at $39 a month including hosting.

How much does a small business website redesign cost?

At an agency, Clique Studios quotes $15,000 to $40,000 for a 10-20 page small business site. A freelancer is usually less; WebFX gives $3,000 to $10,000.

How long does a website redesign take?

8 to 12 weeks for a small business site with an agency, 12 to 16 weeks for a mid-sized one and 16 to 24 weeks for 100+ pages, according to Clique Studios. An AI build takes minutes to an hour; your review takes as long as you need.

Is a redesign cheaper than building a new site?

It can be, because the content, structure and brand already exist. But most of the work is the same: design, building every page and moving content, so expect a similar price range.

What costs are hidden in a website redesign?

Copywriting, photography, moving content, SEO migration (redirects for changed addresses) and ongoing maintenance. Read website redesign SEO before you change any page addresses.

How often should you redesign a website?

There's no fixed rule. Redesign when the site is slow, hard to update, looks dated beside competitors, or no longer describes what you do. Keeping content current between redesigns makes the next one smaller.
